There are no hard and fast rules for the trout of Caithness and Sutherland.

  • Successful wet or nymph patterns, include (amongst many) the Soldier Palmer, Invicta, Zulu, Kate McLaren, Bumbles, Hares Ear, Silver Sedge, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Grouse and Claret, Greenwells and Black Pennel.
  • Useful dry flies include the G&H Sedge, Grey Wulff, dry Greenwell Spider, French Partridge, dry Wickhams, Mini Muddlers, dry Daddy and so on.
  • Normally flies are fished in sizes 10 to 16 with 10/12 being the most commonly used on the big lochs.
